At Bayer & Fahl we have been providing Waukesha patients with reliable dental crowns for over 50 years, and we would enjoy an opportunity to help renew your smile.

What is a dental crown?

Dental crowns are generally used to restore a broken tooth, cover and support a tooth with a large filling, or even to hold a dental bridge in place. They may cover discolored teeth, dental implants, or protect a tooth that may be weak. Dental crowns can also actually hold together parts of a cracked tooth.

What are dental crowns made out of?

Dental crowns can be made up of a single material or various materials. The type of material used by our Waukesha dentists depends upon where the tooth is situated, as well as the condition of the tooth. Typically, crowns are made of ceramic compounds, but in some instances they are made of metal or a combination of metals that include gold, nickel, chromium, or palladium alloys. Most commonly crowns are made from a combination of porcelain infused with metal. The strongest crowns are made from all metal or porcelain/metal.

How does a dental crown work?

A crown is placed over your tooth to cover the tooth in order to restore it to its size and shape, improving the appearance of the tooth itself. The crown is cemented in place, as it fully encases the portion of the tooth above the gum line that is visible.

When may it become necessary to get a dental crown?

Dental crowns are used in many situations, including:

  1. To cover discolored or misshaped teeth
  2. To cover a dental implant
  3. To improve cosmetic appearance
  4. To cover and support a tooth that has a large filling
  5. To protect a weak tooth from breaking
  6. To hold together a fractured or cracked tooth
  7. To hold a dental bridge in place

What is the process for getting a dental crown at Bayer & Fahl?

In most cases preparing a tooth for a crown will require at least two visits to our Waukesha office. Generally, the first visit involves examining and preparing the tooth for the crown, and the second visit involves positioning the permanent crown.

First Visit: Examine and preparation of the tooth.

At the first visit our Waukesha dentist will perform an oral examination, and may even take an X-ray to examine the roots and adjoining bone. If there is any risk of infection or injury to the tooth’s pulp due to decay, it may be necessary to first perform a root canal. Otherwise the dentist will begin preparing the tooth.

In order to prepare the tooth our dentist will begin by anesthetizing the tooth and gum tissue adjacent to the tooth. Next, the tooth will be gently filed down to make room for the crown. Once the filing and reshaping of the tooth is complete our Waukesha dentist will make an impression of the tooth which will be used to make the crown. The dentist will also make impressions of any teeth above and below the tooth receiving the dental to make certain that the crown will not interfere with other teeth or affect your bite. Once the impressions are completed the dentist will install a temporary crown to cover and protect the tooth until the crown is manufactured.

In cases where the crown will be made of porcelain, the dentist will also select the color shade of the crown so it matches the color of the neighboring teeth.

Second Visit: installing the permanent crown.

At your second visit to our Waukesha office, the dentist will remove the temporary crown and prepare the tooth for fitting of the permanent crown. The dentist will install the crown and check it for fit and color match. If everything is acceptable, the dentist will anesthetize the tooth and gum tissue adjacent to the tooth and cement the permanent crown in place.

On very rare occasions either the crown does not fit properly or the color may not match. In these cases it may be necessary to correct the issue and schedule another visit at our Waukesha location to install the corrected crown.
