What is a dental crown?
Dental crowns are often called caps because that’s what they do: they cap or “cover” a tooth. Because they completely cover the tooth, they protect the underlying structure while restoring its normal shape and size.
Dental crowns are durable and securely cemented either to the original tooth or an implant. As a result, they function just as well as the original tooth.

What materials are used to make dental crowns?
Dental crowns can be produced from a variety of materials. Each one has different benefits, so Dr. Akel will talk with you about the materials he recommends for your dental work.
Crowns are made from resin, porcelain, metal, or porcelain fused to metal. While resin materials are the least expensive, they’re not as strong as the others. Porcelain is strong, but not as sturdy as metal. Both resin and porcelain crowns resemble normal teeth. Porcelain is often recommended for front teeth and visible surfaces because it looks the most natural.
When metal is used as part of your crown, it’s usually an alloy, which is a mixture of several metals. Gold alloys contain gold, copper, and other metals. Base metal alloys are made from stainless steel, titanium, or titanium mixed with other metals.
What steps are taken to get a crown?
The tooth that’s being crowned is prepared by slightly reducing its size. Then an impression is made of your mouth, which is used to form the crown. For resin and porcelain crowns, you and Dr. Akel choose a shade that matches that of your existing teeth.
You’ll receive a temporary crown while the permanent crown is being custom made for your mouth. When the new crown is ready, it’s permanently attached to the prepared tooth with dental cement.

Crowns can last the rest of your life, but they can break or fall out. Crowns last longer when you regularly brush and floss and prevent damage by not biting down on hard objects like ice.
