Post OP Instructions

Patients who need post-op instructions can refer to the following general guidelines after their appointment at Shrewsbury Dental Group. However, Drs. Pastagia and Sinha provide you with specific care instructions during your visit. If you have concerns following your procedure and would like to speak with our dentists in Shrewsbury, New Jersey, contact our team at any time.

Root Canal Therapy

Following a root canal, it is common to experience soreness for a few days. We recommend chewing on the opposite side of the affected tooth to reduce irritability. This will also allow the restorative material to set properly. You may be prescribed antibiotics, and you should take them as directed by the dentist. Contact our dentist if you experience increasing tenderness or pain, or a reaction to your medication.

Crowns and Bridges

A temporary restoration will be provided to you while your permanent one is being prepared. You must be careful when cleaning (use a soft bristle toothbrush) and eating (avoid sticky food) when you have a temporary crown or bridge.

You may also feel some sensitivity or irritation after the temporary or permanent restoration is placed, which will soon subside. You can rinse the area with warm salt water to relieve the discomfort, and you can also take an over-the-counter pain reliever.

It will take some time for you to adjust to your new crown or bridge, but please let our dentists know if it feels abnormal in any way. Care for your bridge or crown as you do your natural teeth.

White Fillings/ Bonding

You may experience some sensitivity after receiving a bonded filling, so you should avoid hot or cold foods for a few days after your procedure. You should continue to maintain your regular dental hygiene habits to ensure that your restoration is a success.

Veneers

To avoid having your temporary veneer dislodged, be gentle with your oral hygiene and avoid chewy or hard foods. Just as with crowns or bridges, you may feel increased sensitivity or irritation after your veneer is placed. To reduce your discomfort, try rinsing with warm salt water or talk with your dentist about taking a pain reliever.

You will need some time to adjust to your new veneer. Within a week, it should feel natural. You will need to continue to brush and floss your teeth to make sure that your veneer does not fail.

Extractions

You should have someone drive you to and from our appointment, and that you get adequate rest after your extraction. Bleeding is normal following the surgery, and we will give you gauze to help stop it. Contact our office if the bleeding continues for more than a day, and elevating your head will help lessen blood flow to the area. Pain medication and antibiotics may be prescribed to you. You may also use an ice pack to treat swelling and discomfort.

You should avoid drinking out of a straw or smoking during recovery, as this can dislodge the blood clot in your extraction site. Your diet should also consist of cool, soft food such as yogurt, pudding, thin soup, and similar foods.
