Dental implants benefit more than just your appearance by replacing your missing teeth. Thanks to their versatile and permanent design, implants can keep your smile healthy and prevent the side effects of missing teeth.

Traditional tooth replacement options such as a bridge with a crown or partial dentures can only replace the visible part of the missing tooth. However, since dental implants are anchored directly into your jawbone, they act as a replacement for the tooth root as well. This is very important because the implant stimulates the jawbone to prevent atrophy or degradation due to lack of use.

Healthy Smiles Dental Care offers several tooth replacement options, but dental implants are by far the best and most permanent option. Call our office today in Windsor Locks, CT to schedule a consultation with Dr. Kim and see if implants are right for you!

Dental Implant Procedure

Dental implants have three parts: a fixture, an abutment, and a prosthetic. The fixture looks like a small screw and is placed directly into the jawbone during an initial surgical procedure at our Windsor Locks dental office. The fixture serves as the permanent foundation for the rest of the implant.

Following this procedure, you will need to wait a few months while the implant takes hold, and will typically be provided a temporary crown or restoration to fill the gap in the interim. Over time, the bone and tissue build up and anchor the implant into your jawbone through a process called ‘osseointegration.’

The abutment part of the implant connects the implant’s fixture to the prosthetic. The prosthetic, customized in a dental laboratory, is a porcelain dental crown, bridge, or denture, which fits over the fixture and abutment to replace the missing teeth.

What Are The Benefits of Dental Implants?

Implants provide many benefits beyond the obvious improvement of the mouth’s aesthetics. Filling in the gaps in your smile can make eating and chewing easier. It can also help restore the biting surface of your teeth, properly aligning your jaw to prevent jaw-related conditions like TMJ disorder. The teeth surrounding a gap tend to shift and move due to the extra space, a problem which dental implants resolve. Implants also prevent bone atrophy, which can cause the facial features to sag. Dental implants are permanent and last a lifetime with the proper care.

Can You Replace More Than One Tooth With An Implant?

Yes! Your Windsor Locks dentist can use dental implants to replace one tooth, several teeth in a row, or an entire arch of teeth. Depending on where the gaps in your smile lie, Dr. Kim may use one type of implant in conjunction with another. A single implant replaces a single tooth, standing alone in the mouth. Multiple tooth replacement uses an implant on either side of a dental restoration such as a bridge to remain in place. Implant-supported dentures use four or more dental implants throughout the arch of the mouth to permanently anchor an entire arch of teeth.
