Dental Bridges Aftercare

It is not much fun having a missing tooth. You can end up finding it hard to speak properly, or even eat the way you are accustomed to. So, if you are missing a tooth, it is important to see your dentist to investigate ways of replacing the missing tooth, like dental bridges, and then there is aftercare.

How Do Dental Bridges Work?

Dental bridges work pretty much the way you might expect from the name – they provide a bridge between the gap and the teeth on the other side of the gap. Dental bridges give you back appearance and functionality.

Types of Dental Bridges

The most common type of dental bridge is the traditional bridge, which is made from porcelain or ceramic, and attached to dental crowns on either side of the gap. Another type is the cantilever bridge, when more than one tooth is missing on the other side of the gap. And finally, the Maryland Bridge is used to attach two abutment teeth on either side of the gap.

How Long Will a Dental Bridge Last?

This is where dental bridges aftercare is required. The thing with a dental bridge is that it is only as good as the adjacent teeth. So, if you take care of the teeth that are supporting your bridge, it can stay in place for a very long time. On the other hand, if you allow the adjacent teeth to decay or become prey to gum disease, the bridge will inevitably fail.

Proper Care

You simply care for your bridge the way you would the rest of your teeth. Clean and floss, and use a fluoride toothpaste to protect the adjacent teeth – your bridge will not decay, but the adjacent teeth could.

With proper dental bridges aftercare, your bridge will last a very long time.
