What You Should Know About Dental Implants

Before turning to our Marlboro, NJ, dentists, Dr. Brian Peters and Dr. Wayne Graber, for dental implants, you may need some questions answered about this restorative treatment. We wanted to provide you with as much information as possible about dental implants so you could decide for yourself if this is the restoration that best fits your needs.

What are dental implants?

A dental implant mimics the function of a natural tooth’s root, providing a strong anchor to hold and support a dental crown. The implant itself looks like a tiny titanium screw. A dental crown is then attached to the implant to complete the restoration and to fill the gap in your smile.

What is the procedure like?

The procedure happens in two parts. The first part will entail implanting the metal post into the jawbone. Once this is complete, you will need to wait a few months for osseointegration to take place. This is when the surrounding tissue and bones begin to fuse and grow around the metal, creating a permanent foundation.

During this time, we will design a dental crown that looks just like the rest of your natural teeth. We will also match the shade of the crown to your smile. Then we will send the crown away for fabrication. Once the healing process is complete, we will cement the crown over the implant, and you will finally have a complete smile.

Am I a good candidate for dental implants?

Most healthy adults are great candidates for dental implants. Health is going to be a major factor for your Marlboro, NJ, team when deciding whether someone is right for dental implants. Those who smoke, have weak immune systems, and have uncontrolled chronic health problems are often not ideal for this treatment. Also, implants are not recommended for children as their smiles are still developing.

Do dental implants sometimes fail?

If you maintain good oral hygiene your implant should last you the rest of your life. Of course, implant failure, on rare occasions can happen, but they most often happen to smokers. That’s why it’s incredibly important that you avoid smoking during and after getting your implant.
