Resin Fillings

Resin Restorations in New York, NY

Resin fillings are a wonderful way to restore small amounts of damage in teeth caused by decay. Because the resin material bonds directly to teeth, it creates a long lasting seal. These fillings are able to withstand the continuous biting pressure associated with chewing.

The Procedure:

  • A handpiece is used to remove the decay and shape the tooth
  • A chemical compound is used to roughen the surface of the tooth ensuring there are enough nooks to create a strong bond.
  • To mold the filling to the shape of the prepared tooth, we place a flexible band around the tooth securing it with a small wedge.
  • If the filling is deep, medication is sometimes applied to minimize any side effects of hot and cold sensitivity.
  • The shade of your tooth is matched closely to the shade of the resin material.
  • Once the resin material is applied, we use a curing light to harden and secure the filling.
  • After the filling has solidified, we then adjust the bite and polish the surface, giving the tooth a natural look and feel.

Benefits of Resin Fillings:

  • Resin filings release fluoride over time continuously re-mineralizing the tooth.
  • Resin material bonds with the tooth structure.
  • On a micro-level the resin material expands and contracts, imitating the behavior of live tooth structure.

Post-op instructions for Resin Fillings:

  • If a local anesthetic was used during the procedure, to prevent damage to your check or tongue, avoid chewing until the numbness has worn off completely.
  • If your teeth are sensitive to hot or cold for a few days, this is normal. To minimize this side effect, use desensitizing toothpaste.
  • If the gum tissue is swollen, rinse with salt water three times a day.
