Symptoms of Gum Disease

Gum disease is a chronic infection which affects the supporting tissues surrounding the teeth and results in the progressive loss of the ligament and bone that hold the teeth in place. There are many common types of periodontal disease including aggressive, chronic, necrotizing periodontitis, and periodontitis associated with systemic diseases. Each of these types of periodontal disease has its own distinct characteristics and symptoms, and all require prompt treatment to halt subsequent bone and tissue loss.

Signs Of Gum Disease:
• Gums that bleed when you brush your teeth
• Red, swollen, or tender gums
• Gums that have pulled away from the teeth
• Bad breath that does not go away
• Pus between your teeth and gums
• Loose teeth to any degree
• A change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite
• A change in the fit of removable partial dentures

Each of these possible indicators is worrisome, and you will need immediate dental attention to counteract the progression of gum disease.

Risk Factors For Developing Gum Disease
• Cigarettes or chewing tobacco
• Diabetes
• Using steroids, anti-epilepsy medicine, cancer therapy medication, calcium channel blockers and oral contraceptives
• Crooked teeth
• Old Fillings
• Pregnancy

Treatments For Gum Disease
Treating gum disease will depend on its stage of progression, with gingivitis being easier to treat than advanced periodontitis. Usually antiseptic rinses are used to keep the infection and the oral bacteria under control. Antibiotics may also be used in different forms.

Once the infection is controlled, a number of restorative dentistry procedures may be considered to address the damage done to the gums and teeth as a result of periodontal disease.
