Do You Have Periodontal Disease?

It’s important that any changes in your gums are examined right away.

Gum disease is a dangerous infection because it is often present without the person even being aware of it. This inflammatory infection is progressive, meaning that over time, the symptoms of this condition will only get worse if left untreated. This is why it’s so very important that you maintain good oral hygiene and that you turn to our Fort Collins, CO, dentist, Dr. Ryan Ulibarri, every six months for routine cleanings.

Of course, if you end up noticing any of these telltale signs of gum disease, then you should turn to our dentists right away:

  • Bad breath that doesn’t seem to go away no matter how much you brush
  • Bleeding gums that occur whenever you brush or floss
  • Gums that are inflamed, red, or swollen
  • Receding or shrinking gums, which can cause teeth to appear longer than usual
  • Changes in your bite or the way teeth fit together
  • Loose teeth and eventual tooth loss

There are two main stages of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is the earliest and mildest stage of gum disease, and it is caused by plaque and tartar buildup. Fortunately, gingivitis can be reversed if detected and treated early enough at our Fort Collins office.

Untreated gingivitis will eventually turn into full-blown gum disease or periodontitis. This is a more serious infection that causes pockets of infection to form between the gums and teeth. Over time, these pockets will grow larger, pulling the gums away from the teeth and causing teeth to become loose or fall out.

The good news is that gum disease is absolutely preventable as long as you maintain good oral hygiene and care. Here’s what you can do to keep your gums healthy and happy,

  • Brush your teeth twice a day for a minimum of two minutes each time. Set a timer or use an electronic toothbrush with a built-in timer.
  • Floss between your teeth and along the gum line at least once a day (preferably at night before bedtime) using traditional floss or a water flosser.
  • Make smart, smile-friendly choices regarding your diet. Avoid sugary foods and drinks, as well as processed foods such as white breads and pasta, which can increase plaque buildup.
  • Visit your dentist at least twice a year for dental cleanings and professional exams.
