When to Let Your Toothbrush Go

When you last replaced your toothbrush? If this caused you to think for a moment, chances are it’s time for a new brush. The ADA recommends that a toothbrush is replaced every three to four months. Replace your toothbrush even more frequently if any bristles appear to be frayed or broken.

Selecting the correct brush is important because if the brush’s bristles are too hard they may damage the enamel. When possible, rinse off any remaining toothpaste from the brush and place in an upright position, allowing the brush head to completely dry. Avoid frequently covering your toothbrush as moist environments encourage bacteria growth and keep separate from other brushes to avoid cross-contamination.

Simply rinsing the toothbrush in warm water should take care of toothpaste and food particles. For a more thorough cleaning, the head of the brush may be immersed for about 15 minutes in mouthwash—but any longer than that may damage the bristles. The use of dishwashers, microwaves or ultraviolet lights is not advised as it may damage the toothbrush.
